"I Carry India With Me Wherever I Go": Google CEO Sundar Pichai

"India is a part of me and I carry it with me wherever I go," Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said while receiving the prestigious Padma Bhushan award from India's ambassador to the US.

Mr. Pichai, an Indian-American, was awarded the 2022 Padma Bhushan in the category of business and industry. Born in Madurai, Mr. Pichai was selected as one of the 17 recipients of the award earlier this year.

India's third-highest civilian award in presence of his close family members in San Francisco on Friday.

Accepting the award, Mr. Pichai, said, "I am deeply grateful to the Government of India and the people of India for this great honor. It is incredibly meaningful to be honored in this way by the country that shaped me."

"India is a part of me. I carry it with me wherever I go. (Unlike this beautiful award which I will keep somewhere safe)," he said.

"I was fortunate to grow up in a family that valued learning and knowledge, with parents who sacrificed a lot to ensure I had opportunities to explore my interests," Mr. Pichai said.

Speaking about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's technology vision, Sundar Pichai said, "Prime Minister Modi's Digital India vision has certainly accelerated that progress, and I am proud to see Google India continue to invest and work with governments, businesses, and communities over two transformative decades."

India's ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, expressed confidence that Google will take full advantage of the digital revolution taking place in India.

"I am grateful to be able to do this work together and bring the benefits of technology to more people," said Mr. Pichai.

Taking advantage of a new development in machine learning, Google added 24 new languages to its translation service this year. Eight of them are Indian languages.

"It's important to see how people can access information and knowledge in their language of choice and see the world open up to them in new ways. That's why I continue to be optimistic about technology, so I believe India can and should. Keep leading," he added.
