Cyclone Sitrang' is likely to form in the Bay of Bengal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is expecting a tropical cyclone to form over the West-Central Bay of Bengal on October 23 or 24 Tuesday.

IMD's Bhubaneswar center said in a statement that the cyclonic circulation that formed in and around the South Andaman Sea on Monday has now moved to the North Andaman Sea and its surroundings.

A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Southeast and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours.

The system is likely to move west-northwestward and concentrate as a low-pressure area over the center of the Bay of Bengal on October 22 morning.

The Meteorological Department has predicted that it will eventually become a cyclonic storm over the West-Central Bay of Bengal.

After the March Cyclone Asani named by Sri Lanka, this cyclone -- once it forms -- is expected to be named Thailand's project 'Sitrang', according to a list published by the IMD in April 2020. A total of 169 names, including 13 proposed by each member state, are arranged in a hierarchical order for everyone to decide.
