Floods, landslides kill 7 in Assam; More than 33,000 are in relief camps

The death toll from pre-monsoon floods and landslides in Assam has risen to seven, with more than two lakh people affected in 24 of the 33 districts so far, with two more dead in Cachar district, officials said.

Authorities of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said two individuals dead on in southern Assam's Cachar area during the beyond 24 hours while five died earlier in landslides in Dima Hasao (4) and Lakhimpur (1) areas.

Six people are missing in Cachar district due to floods and landslides, officials said.

The ASDMA bulletin said at least 2,02,385 people were affected in 811 villages in 24 districts and about 6,540 houses were partially or completely damaged.

While the district administration has opened 27 relief distribution centers, 33,300 people have taken refuge in 72 relief camps.

The worst affected districts are Cachar, Dima Hasao, Hojai and Charaideo.

The situation was worse on Tuesday in the hilly area under the Northeast Border Railway (NFR)'s  Dima-Hasao district, as the Lumding-Badarpur single-track railway line was affected due to continuous rains in the hilly region.

The Lumding-Badarpur area in Assam is the only road that connects Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and the southern part of Assam with the rest of the country. As the train service has been cut off for the last 4 days, the prices of essential commodities have gone up.
