Heavy Rains in Mumbai: 50 Flights Canceled, Train Services Disrupted, Schools Closed



Heavy rains in and around Mumbai in the last 24 hours left waterlogged and suburban train services severely affected. Some parts of the city recorded 300mm of rain in the six hours between 1am and 7am on Monday.


The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Konkan belt. Vikhroli's Veer Savarkar Mark Municipal School and MCMCR Powai recorded maximum rainfall of 315 mm in the last 24 hours.


More than 50 flights have been canceled due to heavy rains. Several airlines took to X (formerly Twitter) to alert passengers and urge them to check flight status before departing for the airport.


It showed people from all over the city wading in waist-deep water and cars lining Mumbai roads bumper to bumper. All government, private and municipal schools and colleges across the city are closed.


At Dombivli station, people waited for trains on submerged tracks. Worli, Bundara Bhawan, Kurla East, Kings Circle area of ​​Mumbai, Dadar, and Vidyavihar railway station are waterlogged. More than 30 lakh commuters use suburban local train services daily in Mumbai and the neighboring states of Thane, Palghar, and Raigad.


Train services between Kasara and Tidwala stations in Thane district were disrupted by mud covering the tracks between Adgaon and Thansit stations, disrupting rail traffic on the busy Kalyan-Kasara route, they said.



The tracks were declared unsafe around 6.30 am, the official said.


Officials have said water levels will recede if the rain stops for more than two hours, but the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rain throughout the day. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in Mumbai today.

Sea tides are expected to reach 4.4 meters by 2pm.


Several trains were diverted, rescheduled or stopped due to water logging between Kalyan and Kasara stations of Mumbai division.


Officials told news agency PTI that the railway embankment was damaged due to heavy rains and flash floods in the Vasind-Gardi area between 3 am and 6 am.


At present, several teams of NDRF are stationed at Thane, Vasai (Balgarh), Mahat (Raigad), Siploon (Ratnagiri), Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara Ghatkopar, Kurla and Sindhudurg.


The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescued 49 people from a submerged resort in Maharashtra's Thane and 16 villagers in Palghar. Boats and life jackets were used to rescue people stranded at the resort due to flooding.
