A low-pressure area is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22 and become a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by May 24.

Red alert for Kerala districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Alappuzha in Kerala, predicting extremely heavy rainfall until May 21. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has warned of potential flash floods, urban waterlogging, and landslides, urging residents, especially in hilly and coastal areas, to stay alert.

An orange alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam until Tuesday, indicating very heavy rain. The Idukki District Collector has banned night travel through hilly areas and halted mining activities in Ernakulam and Kottayam due to the heavy rain forecast. Thiruvananthapuram experienced significant waterlogging after heavy rains on Saturday night.

IMD's rainfall warning

Expect widespread light to moderate rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep, and Karnataka. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, and Rayalaseema will have scattered rain over the next week.

Isolated heavy rain is forecast for coastal Karnataka on May 20th and 23rd, south interior Karnataka on May 22nd and 23rd, and coastal Andhra Pradesh and Lakshadweep.

Very heavy rain is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe on May 23rd; coastal Karnataka on May 21st and 22nd; and south interior Karnataka from May 19th to 21st.

Extremely heavy rain is likely in Tamil Nadu and Kerala until May 22nd.

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands will have widespread rain, with heavy rain in the Nicobar Islands from May 20th to 23rd.

Monsoon update

The Southwest Monsoon has progressed into parts of the Maldives and Comorin area, South Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands, and South Andaman Sea, with favorable conditions for further advancement. This movement is due to the strengthening of westerly winds in the lower troposphere (up to 3 km) at about 20 knots, along with southwesterly winds up to 4.5 km above sea level. Increased cloudiness and reduced Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) also support this monsoon progression, according to the IMD.
