Russia's Overnight Attack Damages Four Power Plants in Ukraine

Russian forces launched a "massive" missile attack on Ukraine overnight, damaging four power plants. Ukrainian officials in Kyiv reported that this latest strike is part of an ongoing assault targeting the country's energy infrastructure.

In recent months, Moscow has launched some of its largest strikes on Ukraine's energy facilities, disrupting a considerable portion of production, leading to blackouts and energy rationing across the country.

Moscow reported that Ukraine fired more than 60 drones at southern Russia overnight, marking one of the largest overnight drone attacks. Kyiv said they hit two oil refineries and a military air base.

"The Russian military launched another large-scale missile attack on Ukraine," the Ukrainian army stated in its daily morning report.

"The enemy has attacked the country's energy infrastructure again. This time, they targeted facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Lviv regions. Some equipment has been damaged," Energy Minister German Galushchenko posted on Facebook.

The Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions are located in western Ukraine, near the EU, and are hundreds of kilometers away from the frontlines.

Ukraine's air force reported that Moscow fired 34 missiles, and 21 of them were shot down.

DTEK reported that four of its thermal power plants were "severely damaged" by the recent overnight missile strikes. Ukrenergo, the state electricity operator, disconnected its main power line in western Ukraine as a precaution, urging people to reduce electricity usage. Residents in Lviv were asked to avoid using high-power appliances during peak hours.

Separate shelling in a village near the Russian border in Kharkiv killed one person. Another shelling in Kherson killed one and injured eight. In Kryvyi Rih, two people were injured, and one more was wounded in Kharkiv due to the missile strikes.

68 drones were shot down

Ukraine launched a major drone attack on Russia's southern Krasnodar region overnight, targeting two oil refineries and a military airfield, according to a Ukrainian defense source. The strikes hit key distillation columns at the Ilsky and Slovyansky refineries, causing a fire at the Slavyansk-on-Kuban refinery, which led to a suspension of operations. Videos and photos showed a large fire at the site following a series of blasts.

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that air defenses intercepted 66 Ukrainian drones in Krasnodar and two over the Crimean peninsula. Moscow called it one of the largest drone attacks attempted by Ukraine. Despite concerns from Washington about escalating tensions and potential effects on global oil prices, Kyiv has been striking Russian oil refineries in recent months.
