Russia's first moon mission in decades has failed as the Luna-25 spacecraft crashed into the Moon's surface. The crash was caused by a loss of communication with the spacecraft, which was a setback for Russia's space targets.

Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, reported that they lost contact with Luna-25 at approximately 2:57 pm Moscow time on Saturday. The actions carried out on August 19 and 20 to locate the spacecraft and reestablish communication with it did not produce any outcomes.

Based on initial calculations, Roscosmos stated that Luna-25 entered an unintended orbit before the collision. A dedicated commission will look into the causes behind the Luna-25's failure, as stated by the agency.

Roscosmos explained that they activated the thrusters to shift the probe into its pre-landing orbit. However, an unexpected issue arose on the automatic station during this process, preventing the maneuver from being completed as planned.
