Twitter plans to charge $20 per month for verified accounts

Twitter's new owner Elon Musk has said the verification process on the site is being revamped to add a blue tick next to the profile name. Musk announced the plan in a tweet when a user said he was denied a valuable Blue Tick despite having a large following. While official details about the new verification process are unclear, The Verge reports that the company will soon start charging users for BlueTick.

Launched last year, Twitter Blue lets users edit and undo their tweets, upload videos in 1080p and see which articles are being shared the most across their network.

According to the report, the blue tick will be exclusive to Twitter Blue members – Twitter's subscription brings additional features like editing and undoing tweets. The company is reportedly planning to raise the Blue tariff to $19.99 (roughly Rs. 1,600). Also, already verified users will have 90 days to subscribe to Twitter Blue in order to have a Blue tick on their profile. It is not clear whether Twitter will change the rules to make the verification process more strict or more lenient.

The report also indicated that Twitter engineers have been given a deadline to revamp the Twitter verification process or face losing their jobs. It hasn't even been a week since Musk officially took over Twitter, though he's already fired some key players. Former CEO Parag Agrawal took over in late November last year. Other notable figures such as Twitter CEO Ned Segal and policy chief Vijaya Gadda have also been fired.

Meanwhile, a separate report indicates that Musk plans to cut Twitter staff in the coming days, but the exact details are unclear. It was previously reported that the Tesla chief may lay off 75 percent of Twitter employees to cut operating costs. However, it was later denied.
