Rajiv Kumar will take over as the next Chief Election Commissioner on May 15.

Rajiv Kumar, the current Election Commissioner, will take over as the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) from May 15, the Union Law and Justice Ministry announced on Thursday. Kumar will take over from retiring CEC Sushil Chandra.

"The President is pleased to appoint Sri Rajiv Kumar as the Chief Election Commissioner from May 15, 2022, in accordance with Section (2) of Section 324 of the Constitution. My congratulations to Shri Rajiv Kumar”said Union Law Minister Kiran Rijiju.

On September 1, 2020, Kumar took over as the Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Prior to taking charge of the Election Commission, Kumar was the Chairman of the Public Institutions Selection Board. He joined PESB in April 2020 as President.

Kumar, a 1984 batch officer in the Indian administration of the Bihar / Jharkhand cadre, retired from the IAS in February 2020.

Born on February 19, 1960, Kumar holds several academic degrees, including a BSc, LLB, PGDM and a master's degree in public policy, and has more than 37 years of experience working in government among federal and state employees. Kumar has also been the Director of the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), SBI, NABARD; Member, Economic Intelligence Council (EIC); Member, Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC); Member, Bank Board Bureau (BBB); Member, on various boards and committees such as the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC), the Civil Services Board.

Kumar has a reputation for being instrumental in considering and implementing mergers and acquisitions in the financial sector. The National Pension System (NPS) has been restructured to benefit about 18 lakh, central government employees.
