Cyclonic Storm 'Asani' To Trigger Heavy Rains In Coastal Andhra Pradesh

'Asani' storm triggers heavy rains in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh under the impact of 'Asani', which has intensified into a severe storm in the south-eastern Bay of Bengal.

The epicenter was reported 920 km northwest of the Nicobar Islands, 770 km west-northwest of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 500 km southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and 650 km south of Puri (Odisha).

According to the IMD bulletin on the cyclone, it is likely to move northwest till May 10 and reach the western central and adjoining Bay of Bengal coasts north of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. After that, it is likely to turn back in a northeasterly direction and move towards the northwestern Bay of Bengal off the coast of Odisha. It is likely to gradually weaken and turn into a storm in the next 48 hours.

Severe Cyclonic Storm Asani is about 450 km southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) at 1130 IST on 9th May. It is very likely to move northwestwards till 10th May. Thereafter recurve N-NEwards. It is likely to weaken gradually into a Cyclonic Storm during the next 24 hours.

IMD predicts rain in a few places in coastal Andhra on Monday. Isolated showers in coastal Andhra Pradesh from Tuesday evening with light to moderate showers in a few places and isolated showers in coastal Odisha.

On May 10 and 11, winds of 40-50 kmph and 60 kmph are expected along the coasts of northern Andhra Pradesh.

The highest sea level is in the West Central and adjoining South Bay. Fishermen have been advised not to go to sea for the next four days and those who have gone to sea to return to shore.

Heavy rains are expected from May 10 in some coastal districts of Odisha due to the impact of Asani.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has sharpened its staff and disaster management teams in the wake of the cyclone.

Hurricane Asani is a name given by Sri Lanka, which means  'wrath' in Sinhalese.
