Indian Student Shot At While Trying To Escape Ukraine's Kyiv.

Union Minister VK Singh has said that an Indian student was shot dead in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Singh told the news agency ANI on Thursday, A few days after another student was killed in a Russian shelling in the city of Kharkiv.

The minister said the student was injured in a shooting while trying to escape from Kyiv. He was reportedly taken back to the city and admitted to the hospital.

"We heard the news that a student was shot dead as he was leaving Kiev. He was taken back to Kyiv and immediately taken to hospital. This is going on in the fighting," General (Retired) VK Singh told ANI at Poland's Razo airport.

On Tuesday, an Indian student was killed while standing in line outside a grocery store in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city. Naveen Shekharappa, 21, from Karnataka, had come out to stock up food before boarding the train outside the city.

The ANI quoted General Singh as saying, "The Indian embassy has already given permission for everyone to leave Kyiv. If there is a war, the bullet will not look at anyone's religion or nationality."

Thousands of students are trying to escape from Ukraine by somehow crossing the border, where they can be flown back to countries on deportation flights under "Operation Ganga" to India.

General Singh is one of the four ministers sent as unique agents to Ukraine's adjoining nations to manage the clearing of Indians from war-hit Ukraine.

According to the Foreign Ministry, nearly 17,000 Indians have fled Ukraine since the instructions were issued a fortnight ago. The ministry says more than 6,000 have returned home.
