Throw away Chinese phones, Lithuania tells citizens after finding evidence of in-built censorship tools
As a warning to all countries with phones made by Chinese companies, Lithuania's Ministry of Defense has urged people to refrain from buying "Chinese-made" smartphones.
In particular, the country highlights two companies: Xiaomi and Hawaii and recommends that people throw away the Xiaomi and other Chinese smartphones they currently use. The reason? The country’s cyber security system has detected a built-in audit on these phones, which eliminates the preset list of terms.
It is noteworthy that these allegations were made at a time when Lithuania was engaged in a diplomatic and highly public conflict with China. Relations between the two countries have deteriorated since the Taiwanese delegation was allowed to open an office in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. China has opposed the name "Taiwan".
A new report from the National Cyber Security Center of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense has accused China of making phones. The report states that a total of 449 words in Chinese are automatically audited by computer applications, including the default web browser on Xiaomi phones. The list continues to expand, with terms such as "Free Tibet", "Long live Taiwan's independence" and "Democracy Movement for Censorship".
Lithuania's cybersecurity system has detected audit capabilities on flagship Xiaomi smartphones in Europe, such as the Mi 10T 5G. The state-run company said the audit software was disabled for the "EU region", but could run it at any time remotely.
"Our recommendation is not to buy new Chinese phones and to remove them at a reasonable speed from what we have already purchased," said Deputy Defense Minister Margiris Abukevicius.
