Indian govt pushes Google to remove 100 fradulent instant loan apps
To reduce the number of fraudulent credit applications available online, Google has removed about 100 instant credit apps from the Google Play Store.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said that these applications are involved in the collection and misuse of personal data, as well as data threats, threats to the public and other compulsory methods of debt recovery.
The Ministry of Information Technology has informed Google that law enforcement has notified Google of the availability of these malicious applications that violate Google's policies and regulatory framework. The issue was raised in the Lok Sabha earlier this week.
Ministry officials said they were receiving a number of public complaints against fraud and abuse due to some of these instant credit applications available on Google's application platform.
The U.S. technology company reported that it had reviewed hundreds of such applications in India and pulled them down after being found to be in violation of Google's policies.
“We have reviewed hundreds of personal loan applications in India based on flags submitted by users and government agencies,” said Suzanne Frey, Vice President, Product, Android Security and Privacy.
