New update turns barcode scanner into malware,Google Play Store removed it
An utility called Barcode Scanner was recently removed from the Google Play Store. The app was found to contain malware and has been downloaded more than 10 million times from the official Google Play Store. Even if this is removed, users who have already installed the app on their phones may still be at risk.
As pointed out by Nathan Collier, a security expert at MalwareBites, the app did what it was promoted to do, allowing clients to explore standardized identities and retrieve data. However, malicious code was found in the new version of the application. This was discovered after the application started running an unusual post-installation, and quickly began to show adware and web margins to imaginable malicious sites.
Collier also said that earlier versions of the app did not contain malicious code. The application is said to have been signed by the same digital certification as the previous versions and came from the same developer ‘LavaBird LTD’.
