Air India Flight AI171 Crashes After Takeoff from Ahmedabad
An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner, flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, plunged into the city's Meghani Nagar suburb just minutes after taking off on Thursday afternoon. The plane had 242 people on board: 230 passengers, 10 flight attendants, and 2 pilots.
Flight AI171 took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 PM, and it soon sent a 'MAYDAY' distress call to Air Traffic Control. Then it vanished and finally crashed near a residential area. The massive fire was caused by the heavy fuel load on board for the long international flight.
Locals also said they heard a thundering noise with smoke and flames. Fire engines, ambulances, police, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams arrived promptly. Rescue operations are underway; however, the officials fear the possibility of numerous casualties. Some buildings in the vicinity were also damaged.
The pilots included Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who has more than 8,200 hours of flying experience, and First Officer Clive Kundar, who has around 1,100 hours of flying experience.
The airport is presently closed, and flights have either been delayed or cancelled. Individuals are not encouraged to go near the airport and are asked to wait for instructions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, asking them to go to the site of the crash to offer help. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said the rescue operation is going on at a fast pace and medical aid is being provided to the injured.
Air India and DGCA have initiated an investigation. Boeing and Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have sent a team. The cause of the crash is still not known. Air India has set up an emergency helpline and assistance center for the grieving families.
This is one of India's worst recent plane crashes.
