Maharashtra Factory Blast: 8 Dead, Explosion Heard 5 km Away
A massive explosion took place at an ordnance factory in Bhandara district near Nagpur this morning, killing eight workers and injuring seven others. The blast took place in the LTP section of the factory around 10:30 am, causing the roof to collapse and trapping more than a dozen workers inside.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed the casualties during an afternoon event. "A major mishap has taken place at the ordnance factory in Bhandara, leading to the loss of eight lives and injuries to seven others. This is initial information," he said, appealing to all present to maintain a minute's silence in memory of the victims of the "tragic incident."
Firefighters and medical teams arrived quickly to deal with the situation. Three workers were rescued alive while one body was retrieved during the rescue process. An excavator was used to clear debris.
The explosion was so heavy that it was audible from 5 kilometers away. Thick smoke can be seen from afar rising above the factory as seen in the videos recorded from a distance.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier said that high-ranking officials were at the spot and rescue teams from Nagpur were on their way. Medical teams also stood ready to provide any aid needed.
