Violence in West Bengal After 9-Year-Old Girl's Alleged Rape and Murder
Kolkata, Oct 5 (UNI) Tensions escalated in the Jaynagar area of West Bengal's 24-Parganas district following the grim discovery of a 9-year-old girl's body early Saturday morning. Official sources indicate that she was allegedly abducted, raped, and murdered. The body was located in a marshy area around 3 AM after the girl had been reported missing since Friday evening when she left for private tuition.
The exposure of the body triggered sporadic violence in the Mahishmati market village, where locals set fire to a police outpost and vandalized police vehicles in the morning. This unrest prompted the authorities to send in combat troops to restore order.
The Superintendent of Police for Baruipur reported that action was initiated around 9 PM, leading to the arrest of a suspect named Mustaque at approximately 12:30 AM, with the body being recovered shortly after that. The suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime.
The girl had been unaccounted for since Friday evening, and villagers expressed their outrage, claiming that she was raped and murdered while accusing the police of failing to respond to their initial complaint. The agitated locals also attacked the police camp at Mahismari, throwing stones and forcing law enforcement to retreat until reinforcements arrived to manage the situation.
A significant police presence was deployed, and tear gas was utilized to disperse the crowd that attempted to confront senior police officials on the scene. The victim's father stated that they had filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Mahismari outpost, but the police did not immediately act on their complaint. He recounted that when his daughter did not return from tuition, they sought police intervention without delay.
Reports indicate that the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has acknowledged the alleged rape and murder of the minor. NCPCR Chairman Priyank Kanoongo confirmed that appropriate measures are being taken in response to this incident.
