China Warns: Submarine-Based Laser Weapons Can Target Starlink Satellites

China warns in new study that submarine-based laser weapons could attack Starlink satellites

In the recent Chinese military, a report says that Elon Musk's company, Starlink, has been trying to launch satellites aimed at bringing internet connection to remote locations in the world. The findings indicated the result that their submarines could use lasers to destroy these satellites if the security of China was threatened.

According to the South China Morning Post, the research was conducted by scientists with the People's Liberation Army, who believe that many such submarines should be built. These submarines should be equipped with laser weapons capable of remaining underwater and firing towards satellites using a retractable mast.

The work by Wang Dan was published in a Chinese journal called Command Control & Simulation. This research is targeted at keeping the secret locations of such submarines, unlike the current missile launches that leave visible smoke trails behind.

That is, today's anti-satellite means, such as the ground-to-air missile, are not that effective in view of the huge numbers of satellites in networks like Starlink; they are small and well-distributed so that the destruction of a few would not have a major impact on the network.

Perhaps a more realistic idea would be to use submarines with lasers. Here is how a study outlines the process: so-called "laser boats" would be released into dedicated areas of the sea. They sit idly by as satellites drift into range, based on other forces that dictate where satellites are situated. When the time is right, the laser weapon is raised and fired at the satellite. After the shot is taken, the submarine submerges to wait for the next mission or return home.

Astronomer Jonathan McDowell reports that as of June 2024, 6,219 Starlink satellites are in orbit and 6,146 are operational.
