One Child Killed, 2 Injured in Finland School Shooting; The minor suspect was caught
In Finland, there was a shooting at an elementary school where at least three kids got hurt. Sadly, one of them passed away in the hospital later, according to the police. This happened at Viertola School on Tuesday. The police arrested a 12-year-old child they suspect was involved. It's also mentioned that the injured students are 12 years old.
The school has 800 students and 90 staff members. The shooting occurred after students came back from their Easter break on Monday. Viertola School teaches students aged seven to 15 in primary and middle school classes.
The arrest took place without any trouble, in the suburb of Siltamaki, away from the school. The police now have both the suspect and the weapon in their custody. Currently, there are no other suspects, according to the police.
They did not provide the identity of the suspect or the victims, except to say they were all 12-year-old Finns and students at the school.
Anja Hietamies, the mother of an 11-year-old student, said she got a message from her daughter after the shooting happened, according to Reuters.
She mentioned that they were in a dark, locked classroom where they couldn't talk on the phone but could send messages," Hietamies said. She added that her daughter was frightened.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo described the shooting as extremely shocking.
"My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all the other students and staff," he mentioned on X.
Past school shootings in Finland have drawn attention to Finland’s gun policy.
In November 2007, an 18-year-old man was shot at a secondary school in Jokela, which is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Helsinki. He killed the headmaster, a nurse, and six students before taking his own life.
A year later, in September 2008, 22-year-old Matti Juhani Saari killed 11 people at a vocational school in the western town of Kauhajoki.
