14 priests got injured in a big fire at Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar temple on Holi

At least 14 priests got hurt when a big fire started at the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday. The fire happened during the early morning 'Bhasma aarti' ceremony inside the main part of the temple on Holi, according to officials.

Eyewitnesses said that when people threw gulal to celebrate Holi, some accidentally fell on the camphor-lit puja thali. As a result, the camphor fell on the ground, and the fire spread.

An official mentioned that the incident got caught on CCTV cameras placed in the temple.

14 priests suffered burns. Some are getting treatment in the district hospital here, and eight went to Indore for treatment. An investigation has been started by Zila Panchayat CEO Mrinal Meena and Additional Collector Anukool Jain. They will submit a report in three days.

Many people, including some prominent people, were in the temple, but none of the devotees were injured, he said. The injured, including temple workers and Sanjay Guru's head priest, were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

In a message on X, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed that the incident was unfortunate, but assured that the situation is now under control.

"Some priests were injured and are now in hospitals in Indore and Ujjain. I am going there myself. I have started an official inquiry to prevent such incidents from happening in future. Those responsible will face the consequences," he said.

Home Minister Amit Shah mentioned that he's praying for the injured to get better. He wrote on X, "I spoke with Chief Minister Shri @DrMohanYadav51 and got updates about the fire at Shri Mahakal Temple in Ujjain. The local authorities are helping and treating the injured. I pray to Baba Mahakal for the quick recovery of the injured."
