Missing Indian student at Purdue University found dead on campus

Indian Student Neel Acharya Found Dead in Indiana, US, One Day After Reported Missing

An Indian student named Neel Acharya, studying at Purdue University in Indiana, USA, has been found dead after being missing since Sunday (Jan 28), as reported by local media.

The Tippecanoe County Coroner's Office reported that police were called to 500 Allison Road in West Lafayette on the university campus due to a potential deceased person. Upon reaching the location, they discovered the body of a young man, presumed to be a college student, who was later identified as Acharya by the authorities.

Later, through an email to the computer science department at the university, Chris Clifton, the temporary head of the CS department, shared the sad news of Acharya's unexpected passing with students and faculty.

Importantly, Acharya was studying both computer science and data science as a double major at the John Martinson Honors College of Purdue University.

On Sunday, Neel's mom, Gaury Acharya, made a plea on X, saying, "Our son Neel Acharya has been missing since yesterday, Jan 28 (12:30 AM EST). He's a student at Purdue University in the US. The last person who saw him was the Uber driver who dropped him off at Purdue University. We're seeking any information about him. Please assist us if you know anything.

The Indian Consulate in Chicago responded to her post, stating, "We are in contact with the authorities at Purdue University and Neel's family. The Consulate is ready to provide all the support and assistance we can."

Earlier this week, a homeless man attacked and killed an Indian student (Vivek Saini ) with a hammer inside a store in Lithonia, Georgia, USA, using repeated blows. A video of the incident went viral on the internet but the date of the incident has not been confirmed.

The person who attacked Vivek Saini is said to be someone without a home who used to visit the store often. Someone familiar with the situation told the media that the police took swift action after seeing the video evidence, and arrests were made quickly.

Vivek Saini's body was returned to his family in India on January 24th.
