India Restarts E-Visa Services for Canadian Nationals
India will start giving e-visas to Canadians again after stopping for two months. This move suggests things might be getting better between the two countries.
India decided to allow certain types of visas for Canadians again after stopping them for a month. The Canadian government was happy about this and called it 'good news for Canadians.
Allowing e-visas again is a big step in making things better between India and Canada. Relations had gotten worse because Canada accused India of being involved in a murder on Canadian soil earlier this year.
The disagreement between India and Canada started in June when someone killed Nijjar outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau then said in Parliament that there were "credible" connections between Indian government agents and the killing, according to intelligence reports. The US supported these claims with intelligence help, but there hasn't been public evidence to prove them yet.
The Indian government has kept saying over and over that the accusations of being involved in Nijjar's death are 'absurd' and 'motivated.' They've asked Ottawa to show proof for their claims.
Because of what Canada did, India did a few things back. They kicked out some intelligence officers, reduced the number of diplomatic staff, and gave warnings about travel. A big move was stopping visa services for Canadians in September, which was seen as a direct response to what Canada said.
The fact that visa rules are getting easier suggests that things might be getting better between the countries. The External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, had mentioned before that India was willing to make these measures less strict. But he also said that the relationship between the two countries is going through a tough time.
