Bengali student commits suicide in Kota, 28th case this year

A student from West Bengal committed suicide in Kota, Rajasthan. This is the 28th suicide in the city this year. Kota is known as a coaching hub for competitive exams, attracting students from all over the country.

Forid, who is from West Bengal, was staying in Kota's Waqf Nagar area while getting ready for NEET, the nationwide exam for admission to medical education programs.

Police reported that Forid was discovered hanging in his room yesterday evening. He was quickly taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. According to fellow students residing in the same rented accommodation as Forid, they last saw him at 4 pm. Concerned when he didn't emerge from his room and didn't respond to calls until 7 pm, they alerted others. The landlord then contacted the police.

Police mentioned that they hadn't discovered a suicide note yet. They also stated that the student's family has been notified. According to the police, Forid had been residing in Kota since the previous year.

The suicides in Kota have led to discussions about students' mental health and the overwhelming stress they face. In an effort to address this concerning trend, the state government issued guidelines for coaching centers last year. These guidelines urge coaching centers to implement measures that promote a stress-free environment for students.

A Mumbai doctor named Aniruddha Narayan Malpani filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) earlier, alleging that coaching centers treat students as "commodities" to serve their financial interests, pushing them to the brink of death. The petition, presented by advocate Mohini Priya, points out that although student suicides in Kota have gained attention, a similar situation exists in other private coaching centers across the country. The petition emphasizes the absence of rules or regulations holding these centers accountable.
