India-Canada Tensions: Allegations and Controversies

In recent months, India-Canada relations have significantly deteriorated due to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations, suggesting potential Indian involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist activist on Canadian territory.

The allegations arise from the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh Canadian citizen who was fatally shot by masked assailants in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023. On September 19, Prime Minister Trudeau informed Parliament that Canadian authorities were actively probing "credible claims" of a potential connection between the killing and individuals associated with the government of India.

India strongly denied the allegations, saying they are "ridiculous and driven by ulterior motives." In response to Canada expelling an Indian diplomat in August, India has expelled a Canadian diplomat as well.

The disagreement between the two countries has created problems for India and Canada's relationship. Over the past few years, their relationship has faced difficulties because of various concerns, like how India treats its Sikh minority and its record on human rights.

A Sikh community resides in Canada and their presence is influential. Some members of the Sikh community have raised concerns about the government. Again, in 2018 the Trudeau-led government participated in an event organized by Sikhs in Toronto. Some supporters of Khalistan also attended this meeting. It sparked controversy as the Indian government accused Canada of supporting the Khalistan movement, which seeks to establish a homeland for Sikhs in Punjab.

The Indian government has also criticized Canada's recent decision to relax immigration rules for Sikhs from India. Canada accuses India of trying to attract Sikh immigrants to weaken India.

The argument between India and Canada is bad for their relationship. They are good friends in trade and culture, but these problems will harm that friendship. They stopped important visits, and their trade and investments will probably get worse.

The disagreement is making things difficult for the Indian community in Canada. Some Indians there feel scared and bothered because of the accusations against the Indian government.
