3 robberies in 10 minutes,74-Year-Old Killed

A local gang allegedly attacked and robbed three people in separate incidents in south Delhi's Sagarpur area within 30 minutes on Monday morning.

The Delhi Police reported that thieves on a motorcycle robbed people of their jewelry and belongings while they were jogging or walking close to their homes. The gang also attacked all the victims, leading to the death of a 74-year-old man.

The first incident took place at 5.17 am. Ashok (54), a resident of Jagdamba Vihar, was walking near the park when he saw three people on a bike. Police said he was first stabbed and robbed of his watch and wallet. Ashok was rushed to DDU Hospital and later discharged.

Within five to ten minutes, the criminals carried out two more robberies, officials said.

Mohan Lal Chhabra (74) was out for a walk when the attackers stabbed him and stole his gold jewelry and money. His family and neighbors rushed him to the hospital, but he couldn't recover from his injuries. People in the area mentioned that he used to go for morning walks and handle household tasks frequently. Chhabra had retired from a private company in Delhi and was living with his wife and children.

In another incident, a robbery happened close to Durgapark. The victim, Om Dutt Singh, from Sagarpur, was taken to the hospital with stab wounds. His condition improved, and he was later released from medical care. He had lost Rs 500 in cash and certain documents due to the robbery.

Police said that during the investigation, teams inspected all three locations and took footage from nearby areas.

Police have confirmed the arrest of the three accused.

The consecutive events triggered a fast reaction from the police, who relied on information from the local community to locate Akshay Kumar, a well-known criminal with a history of 42 cases. His associates, Sonu and Vaibhav Srivastava were also taken into custody. The weapon used in the murder, as well as the stolen belongings, have been found. Police are also investigating whether the three suspects were under the influence of alcohol during the incidents.

These incidents have created a new challenge for the Delhi Police. A new trend has come to light where robbers target senior citizens in the early hours of the morning when the streets are deserted. Many senior citizens, including women, go for morning walks in the environs of the national capital. The spate of robberies has left the police worried about the new modus operandi. Delhi Police officials are currently brainstorming on the steps to be taken to prevent such incidents from happening again.
