Another Cheetah died in Kuno National Park, the 9th Death Since March

On Wednesday morning, authorities found a dead female leopard named 'Datri' in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park. Authorities are currently conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of his death.

Three cubs were among the nine leopards that died in a national park in Madhya Pradesh. In September last year, 20-year-old cheetahs brought from Namibia and South Africa were reintroduced into the national park. Since then, four cubs have been born there.

According to the statement, there are 14 cheetahs in Kuno National Park, consisting of seven males, six females, and a female cub, all kept in bomas (enclosures). These cheetahs are in good health, and the park's wildlife veterinarians, along with a Namibian expert, are closely monitoring their well-being. However, two female cheetahs were outside the enclosures, and unfortunately, one of them was found dead.

The deaths of these cheetahs have been attributed to a range of factors. According to experts, potential causes include intra-species fights, diseases, accidents both before and after their release, and injuries sustained during hunting. Predatory attacks by other animals and heatstroke have also been cited as possible reasons for the fatalities.

The use of radio collars on cheetahs has sparked controversy because some experts believe these collars, used to track and monitor the animals, cause skin infections due to the constant humidity during the rainy season. These infections are said to attract flies, resulting in maggot infections and septicemia, a severe blood infection that has killed some of the cheetahs.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) claim that the cheetah mortalities resulted from natural causes and should not cause excessive concern. They state that none of the cheetahs died due to unnatural causes like poaching, snaring, poisoning, road accidents, or electrocution.
