Punjab schools closed till July 13 due to heavy rains

On Monday, the Punjab government announced that schools would be closed until July 13.

The Ludhiana district administration also announced the closure of all schools and other educational institutions on July 10 (Monday). Both of these announcements came earlier in the day, when Punjab University declared a holiday in all affiliated colleges.

For the first time, Chandigarh administration has advised to consider temporary closure of public/private offices.

As heavy rains continue to lash Punjab state, the civic administrations of Patiala and Jalandhar, and Ambala in Haryana have sought help from the Indian Army for flood relief operations. Several villages were inundated as rainwater inundated Robar district on Monday.

In the presence of ADC Jagraon Amit Sareen the Gujjars living on the banks of Sutlej river in Sidhwan were rescued and relocated as a precautionary measure.

The administration has advised people to be alert and avoid unnecessary travel due to the fear of flooding.

Punjab's neighboring states, including Delhi, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, have also announced school closures amid the heaviest July in history. Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that notices regarding closure of schools have been sent to all school administrators.

Heavy rain since Sunday left many parts of Punjab inundated and several roads and residential areas inundated.
