IMD issues an ‘orange’ alert in Mumbai for the next 24 hours
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'orange' alert for Mumbai and Thane. Today, a red alert has also been issued for Raigad, Pune, and Palghar districts. This happened after a week of moderate monsoon rains.
The city will receive heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places on Saturday, the IMD said.
In the last 24 hours, Mumbai was lashed by heavy rains, with over 100 mm of rain recorded till Wednesday morning. It was the rainiest day in July this season.
According to the IMD, an 'Orange' alert is issued when rainfall falls between 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in a day and a 'Red' alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 204.5 mm in a day.
The IMD has also warned of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and Odisha at 8.30 am on July 19.
Raigad District Collector Yogesh Mhase announced an occasion on Wednesday and asked schools and universities in the region to close due to heavy rainfall.
Heavy rains in Mumbai and Thane have caused severe waterlogging and affected essential services.
A person has died after a house collapsed due to heavy rains in the Bhandup area of Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Corporation said.
On Tuesday, local train services were also affected due to heavy rains. Central Railway CPRO informed that services between Badlapur and Ambernath have been suspended due to heavy water logging on the track.
Meanwhile, many parts of India including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, and Kerala continue to receive heavy rains.
