ISRO launched 9 satellites on PSLV rocket today

India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C54 (PSLV-C54) was launched on Saturday morning from a rocket port in Andhra Pradesh carrying an Indo-French Earth observation satellite (EOS 6) and eight nanosatellites.

PSLV-C54 rocket carrying EOS-06 and 8 nanosatellites called Oceansat-3 from Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

PSLV-C54 took off from the First Launch Pad (FLP) at Sriharikota at 11.56 am in a two-hour multi-orbit launch.

Including the primary payload, the nine satellites will have a lift-off mass of 321 tonnes on the 44.4-meter-tall PSLV-C54. This is the 24th flight of the PSLV-XL version.

Eight nanosatellites were developed by private companies and jointly developed by India and Bhutan. Earth observation satellite-06 is the third generation satellite in the Oceansat series and is designed to provide the continuation services of the Oceansat-2 spacecraft with improved payload specifications and application areas.

The primary objective of the work is to ensure data continuity of ocean color and wind vector data to sustain operational applications.

After placing Oceansat-3 into orbit, the rocket's PS4 orbit will be shifted to a 516 km sun-synchronous polar orbit and the rest of the satellites will be positioned over the next hour. A full space for a sun-synchronous polar orbit takes about two and a half hours.

This is one of the longest missions carried out by ISRO scientists involving a rocket changing its orbit using the two Orbit Change Thrusters (OCTs) used on the PSLV-C54 launch vehicle.
