2 dead in Chennai due to heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, school holidays in 7 districts



According to the latest weather forecast of the India Meteorological Department, heavy rains and thundershowers are likely to continue over Tamil Nadu this week. After the Northeast Monsoon hit the state on October 29, Chennai and its surrounding districts received widespread, heavy rains.


2 people died due to heavy rain in Chennai on Tuesday night. Several areas in the city and its suburbs were also inundated following the rains.


2 people have died in rain-related incidents in Chennai since Monday. Shanthi (45) from Puliantope, Chennai died on Tuesday morning after a concrete slab collapsed and 52-year-old auto driver Devendhiran was electrocuted near Vyasarpadi.


The Tamil Nadu government announced rain holiday on Wednesday morning for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts.


Although the rain will ease on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain at one or two places in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts.


Two tunnels were closed due to rain. Traffic jammed in the city and vehicles moved slowly.


Chennai Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) chief S Balachandran said heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Thiruvannamalai in the next few hours. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin held a video conference with all district collectors and officials regarding the precautionary measures taken to mitigate the flood.
