India bans Muslim group PFI for alleged 'terrorist' links




A case will be filed in court challenging the ban imposed on the student wing of the Popular Front of India for indulging in terrorist activities. The central government banned the PFI yesterday after several raids and the arrest of more than 240 members.


The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) for five years for allegedly financing militancy, following several raids and arrests by central agencies across the country.


Apart from this, PFI's affiliate organizations are - Rehab India Foundation (RIF), Campus Front of India (CFI), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organization (NCHRO), National Women's Front, Junior Front, Akhtar India. Trust and Rehabilitation Trust of Kerala were also banned.


Several states demanded a ban on the system. The decision was taken based on the report of the investigating agencies.


On September 22 and September 27, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Enforcement Directorate (ED), and state police raided the PFI.


106 members of the BFI organization were arrested in the initial raid. Meanwhile, in the second round of raids, 247 people belonging to PFI were arrested/detained. Intelligence agencies have got enough evidence against this organization and based on that decision was taken to ban this outfit.


On September 22, the NIA and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids against PFI at 93 locations in 15 states: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh. , Maharashtra, Goa, West Bengal, Bihar, and Manipur. 


At least 106 PFI members and their alleged accomplices were arrested in the first round of raids.


The houses and offices of PFI top leaders and members were raided in connection with five cases registered by the NIA following continuous inputs and evidence on terrorism and financing of terrorist activities, arms training, and organizing radicalization camps.
