BENGALURU, KARNATAKA WEATHER TODAY (SEPTEMBER 08): Though floodwaters have receded in some parts of Bengaluru, the dire situation in the IT capital is far from over as the Met department has predicted heavy rains in southern interior parts of Karnataka, including the city for next two days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rain is expected at a few places over coastal and south interior Karnataka on September 8-9 and interior Karnataka on September 9-10.
According to IMD data, the Bengaluru city observatory has recorded 251.4 mm of rainfall in the last four days, including 131.6 mm on Sunday, the highest 24-hour rainfall in September in 34 years.
While experts attribute the floods in the IT capital to obstruction of rainwater by storm drains and encroachments on aquifers, excessive rainfall also played its part.
Meanwhile, Mumbai was lashed by thunder and lightning after rain on Wednesday. News agency ANI reported that Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune, Ratnagiri, Nashik and other districts have been issued a yellow alert for rain for the next 5 days. In view of intense Monsoon conditions, rainfall activity is likely to increase in Maharashtra over the next 4 to 5 days, IMD Mumbai said.
Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nasik, Ahmednagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satar, Sangli, Sholapur, Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Osmanabad are expected to see light to heavy rainfall in the next five days.
In other news, three days of mourning have been declared in Karnataka following the demise of Umesh Katti, Minister of Forests and Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs.
There will be no official work for the three days, but other work related to flood management and other emergency work will be held, said Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
