Six people have been arrested for smuggling arms and ammunition ahead of Independence Day in Delhi, officials said today.

A large number of explosives including 2,000 bullets were recovered from them.

The accused were arrested with two bags of bullets from Anand Vihar in the national capital. The police have registered a case and are investigating.

As India gears up for Independence Day celebrations on August 15, security has been beefed up across the national capital. From heavy police security to high-definition cameras, the Delhi Police has pulled up its socks to quell any threat on August 15. The country is celebrating its 75th Independence Day.

Police have also intensified patrols and vehicle checks. Police said tight security arrangements have been made at all important places in Delhi, including metro stations, railway stations, airports, and markets.

Hotels, parking lots, and restaurants are being checked and a drive to verify tenants and workers is underway, officials added.

"On Independence Day, more than 10,000 policemen in various roles will be deployed at the Red Fort and the ceremonial routes. We have made flawless and foolproof security arrangements for the day," Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Debendra Pathak was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
