Not allowed to write exams wearing hijab, 2 Karnataka students walked out.
Two Muslim students voluntarily left the examination center on Friday after authorities refused to allow them to wear the hijab in the second PUC (Class 12) examination in Karnataka.
According to media reports, the incident took place at Vidyodaya Pu College in Udupi. About 6.84 lakh students wrote the second PUC (Class 12) examination held today in Karnataka amid heavy security. Students wearing hijabs were instructed to remove them at the entrance and take the exam.
Karnataka Education Minister PC Nagesh had earlier announced that students wearing hijab would not be allowed to write the second PUC exam. Employees are not allowed to wear hijab during exams.
The Government of Karnataka, which has successfully conducted the SSLC (Class 10) examinations amidst the hijab controversy, is conducting the important second PUC examinations from Thursday to May 18.
Many Muslim women who wore the hijab for the exam removed it in a separate envelope and said they would wear it again after the exam.
"The hijab is important and it is important to write and pass the exam. Our future depends on our exam results," a Muslim student told reporters in Bangalore, according to the PTI news agency.
The Karnataka High Court on March 15 dismissed petitions seeking permission to wear the hijab inside the classroom. The court upheld the government's ban, saying that wearing the hijab was not an essential religious practice of Islam and that a uniform dress code should be followed in educational institutions.
Last month, more than 40 Muslim students from Udupi, a coastal region of Karnataka, boycotted the primary university exams as they were openly affected by the High Court verdict.
Earlier, women also boycotted practical exams.
