China Cyber Attack On Power Grid Near Ladakh Between Aug-March.
A report by the private intelligence agency Record Future on Wednesday said Chinese state-owned hackers near the Ladakh power supply near Ladakh had been targeted for the past eight months, a new potential flashpoint following the protracted military conflict between the two countries in the region.
“In recent months, we have observed network intrusions targeting at least seven Indian State Load Dispatch Centers (SLDCs) responsible for carrying out phase control and real-time operations for transmission of electricity within these respective states. Significantly, the target is geographically concentrated with SLDCs identified in northern India, near the disputed Indo-China border in Ladakh, ”the panel said.
The attacks reportedly took place between August and March last year. During the investigation, they said the data was sent to command and control servers provided by the Chinese government around the world, both inside and outside Indian Lot Despatch Centers.
"In addition to focusing on the power grid resources, we have further acknowledged the differences between the Indian Emergency Response Team and the Indian subsidiary of a multinational logistics company," Future of Records said.
Prior to releasing the report, the panel said it had alerted the government about its findings. The government has not yet responded to a request for comment.
The intelligence agency is considered to be the largest in the world to specialize in detecting government-provided hacker threats, with Chinese attackers seeking to gather information surrounding key infrastructure systems.
''Continuing to target state and Regional Load Despatch Centres in India over the past 18 months, this target may be a long-term strategic priority for the threat posed by the elected Chinese government, first from RedEcho and now in this latest TAG-38 operation. Actors operating in India, "it said.
High-quality cyber attacks are on the rise around the world. Millions of people on the east coast of the United States were hit by a ransomware attack on a large gas pipeline last year, while a large part of Australia was just minutes away from losing power after being hit by a major power grid.
'' The recorded future is constantly being monitored by Chinese government-provided task forces targeting various sectors worldwide ... However, the concerted effort to target Indian power grid assets in recent years has been significantly different from our perspective, and the continuing escalating tensions and border issues between the two countries are worrying. We believe that "it said.
