Foreign Ministers of India and China meet for the first time after the border conflict.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to meet with his Indian envoy in New Delhi after China's unannounced arrival in the wake of the 2020 border clashes that erupted after tensions between the two countries erupted in 2020.
Wang met Indian Foreign Minister Subramaniam Jaisankar at 11 a.m. (0530 GMT) on Friday, a ministry spokesman told Reuters without elaborating. According to Indian media reports, he has already met Ajit Doval, India's powerful national security adviser.
During the meeting between Mr. Doval and Wang, the two sides discussed the need for early and thorough involvement in the disputed areas and the removal of barriers to bilateral relations going back to its normal course.
Mr. Jaishankar will later brief reporters on his talks with the Chinese Foreign Minister.
Wang Yi, who visited Pakistan and Afghanistan before arriving in Delhi, is scheduled to leave for Nepal this evening.
The visit of the Chinese Foreign Minister has been kept secret, without any official words from either side. His arrival can only be confirmed by monitoring the flight path of his plane, which departed from Afghanistan on Thursday.
Shortly before Wang's arrival, India reacted harshly to his "uninvited note" about Kashmir at an event in Pakistan. In his inaugural address to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Pakistan, the Chinese Minister noted about Kashmir: "We have heard again today the calls of many of our Islamic friends about Kashmir. China shares the same hope."
New Delhi insisted that "matters relating to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are the internal affairs of India as a whole" and that other countries, including China, have no right to comment.
Foreign ministers have met several times outside India over the past two years to discuss bilateral issues.
