11 people have been killed in a fire at a garbage depot in Hyderabad.

11 people were killed in a fire that broke out at a wood depot in Bhoiguda in Secunderabad on Wednesday morning. The gas cylinder reportedly exploded due to a short circuit at around 4am, and within minutes the entire sawmill containing sawdust caught fire, and workers sleeping inside.

One of the rescued is in critical condition at Gandhi Hospital.

The dead were migrant workers from Chapra district in Bihar. They were identified as Bittu, Sikander, Dipak, Pankaj, Rajesh, Raju, Chintu, Dinesh, Satyander and Damodar.

"The only way for the workers to get out was through the scrap shop on the ground floor, the shutters of which were closed," said Central Zone DCP M Rajesh Chandra.

The fire control room was notified at 3 a.m. and nine fire trucks were engaged in putting out the blaze for more than three hours.

"A worker came out of the building and he is being treated," said Hyderabad CB CV Anand.

Heavy smoke billowed from the fiber cables in the godown and the fire intensified.

"The liquor barn contained empty bottles, paper, plastic, and cables. The first floor was connected to the ground floor by a spiral metal staircase. The first floor had two rooms and 11 bodies were recovered from the same room. One by one the bodies were charred beyond recognition." Regional Fire Officer V Papaiah said.

City Police Commissioner CV Anand said all the victims were from Chapra district of Bihar and had been working for two years with a monthly salary of Rs 12,000.

At around 4am the cylinder seemed to explode. We got a Dial 100 call. Our night shift officers rushed to the scene with fire department staff. No one knew who the workers were. It seems to have been done. Many victims seem to have died from inhaling the smoke, "said Anand.

One of the workers jumped out of the godown and survived. Police plan to talk to him about what happened after he got permission from doctors at Gandhi Hospital.

Announcing the eulogy to the families of the victims, Prime Minister Modi said, "My thoughts are with them." Taking this on Twitter, PMO India said, "It is heartbreaking to lose my life in the tragic fire at Bhoiguda in Hyderabad. I have my thoughts with the families of the victims at this tragic time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund will provide Rs 2 lakh each to the relatives of the victims.

Pained by the loss of lives due to a tragic fire in Bhoiguda, Hyderabad. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of the deceased: PM @narendramodi

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao has expressed shock over the incident and announced Rs 5 lakh each for the victims. Rao directed Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar to make arrangements for their bodies to be taken home.
