Kanyakumari Flood due to open of dams
Residents of Chennai and adjoining districts are beginning to get some relief from the incessant rains, while the southern districts of Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli have been hit by heavy rains. Kanyakumari district received 717 mm of rain from October 1 to Saturday, November 13 at 8 am. 90 mm of rain fell in 24 hours till 8.30 am on November 13.
Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram and Nagercoil-Tirunelveli train services were affected by the tracks and landslides.
An official said: Over 40,000 cubic feet of water came into the pit Tamiraparani river on Saturday evening against the capacity of 20,000 cubic feet of the Tamiraparani river.
The rains caused unexpected flooding in many areas. "Many parts of the district were inundated in the middle of the rains after all the (water) canals and irrigation tanks were filled. The floodwaters inundate the low-lying areas due to water coming from the Perunchani dam.
Some people from Kanyakumari district said that Esanthimangalam, Suchindram, Appta Market, Therakalputhoor and adjoining areas were all inundated.
“There is knee-deep water in the street. The water level in the low-lying areas is rising due to continuous heavy or moderate rains. The water under the Suchindram dam is also filling up fast due to rains.
Kanyakumari Collector M Aravind said, “We evacuated 1,800 people till 3 pm on Saturday and housed them in 39 relief camps and provided them with food, water and other essential items. We are currently in the process of evacuating as many people as possible from the banks of rivers and dams as more rainfall is expected.
