Heavy rain in Chennai, the Meteorological Center has issued a 'Red Alert'.
Heavy rains lashed many parts of the city today following a Red Alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Ranipettai will receive heavy rains today, the Weather Department office said.
The meteorological department had earlier forecast heavy to very heavy rains in the southern coastal areas of Rayalaseema and adjoining northern Tamil Nadu in the next 24 hours.
"It has been raining heavily in coastal Tamil Nadu since early this morning," the IMD tweeted.

The IMD said that the LPA in the southeast and adjoining southwestern bay is currently a well-marked low pressure area along the southwest and adjacent west-central Gulf of North Tamil Nadu-southern Andhra Pradesh.
It is likely to strengthen into a barometric depression over the next 12 hours, the IMD said.
The Weather Department has forecast strong winds in the south-west and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Tamil Nadu-Pondicherry-south Andhra Pradesh (45-55 kmph to 65 kmph).
Fishermen are advised not to visit these areas till the morning of November 19 as the sea will be very turbulent from the southwest and adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal and Tamil Nadu-Pondicherry-South Andhra coasts. , "IMD said in an official statement.
