Millions under strict lockdown in China after Covid outbreak

55 new cases were reported in China on Monday as the fast-spreading delta variant reached more than 20 cities in a dozen provinces.

The Wuhan cluster came after the official daily count was released, but it was confirmed by state media, which said it had detected infections at a train station.

Covid-19 quoted prevention and control officials as saying, "Seven people have been identified as migrant workers."

Major cities, including Beijing, are now testing millions of residents, while keeping close contact around residential complexes and isolation.

Officials in the capital acknowledged that the comments were made by the Beijing government "to raise awareness, take drastic precautionary measures and protect (the city) from death" at no cost.

More than 1.2 million residents were subjected to severe locking for the next three days in the central city of Zhuzhou in Hunan province as authorities launched a nationwide testing and vaccination campaign, according to an official report. “The situation is even worse and more complicated,” the Zhuzhou government said.

China has boasted of its success in bringing domestic cases to almost zero since the first appearance of the corona virus in Wuhan.
