Ship Stuck in Suez Canal

The Japanese owners of the ship said the large container ship stranded in the Suez Canal could be removed on Saturday.

For the fifth day in a row on Saturday, a giant container ship ran aground in the Suez Canal in Egypt as authorities launched new efforts to free the ship and reopen an important east-west waterway for global shipping.

Shoei Kisen leader Yukito Higaki spoke at a news conference on Friday, saying 10 duckboats had been stopped to clear the banks and the bottom of the canal.

The United States has offered to send aid, including a team of US naval experts.

The blockade has also caused major traffic congestion for more than 200 ships in the Red Sea.

Mr Higaki told a news conference in the western Japanese city of Imabari that he was "continuing to remove sediment with additional sediment tools."

He added that the crew hoped to relocate the ship by Saturday evening, Tokyo time, the  Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported.

“The ship was not taking water,” he said. "There is no problem with its routers and propellers. Once it floats again, it can function.
