The World's Largest Cricket Stadium Inaugurated By President Ram Nath Kovind
Spread more than 63 sections of land, the arena has been worked at an expected expense of Rs 800 crore, and with a seating limit of 1,32,000 observers, it has outperformed the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Ground which can oblige 90,000.
"The stadium was conceived by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. At that time he was the President of the Gujarat Cricket Association [GCA]," Govind said at the inauguration ceremony.
"This stadium is an example of eco-friendly development," the president added.
The President inaugurated the stadium in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.
"We have decided to name the country's prime minister. This is Modiji's dream project," Shah said after taking office.
The President also performed the ground breaking ceremony for a sports complex in the stadium named Sardar Patel Sports Complex for fields like football, hockey, basketball, kabaddi, boxing and lawn tennis.
