US Government Blacklists | Xiaomi and 8 other Chinese Companies

The U.S. government has put on hold military ties with presidential smartphone maker Xiaomi and China's third-largest national oil company, which put pressure on Beijing last week when President Donald Trump was in office.

The Department of Defense added nine organizations to its rundown of Chinese organizations with military connections, including Xiaomi and state-possessed plane producer Commercial Aircraft of China (Comac).

According to an executive order signed by Trump in November, U.S. investors must exclude their shares in Chinese companies from the military list by November this year.

Xiaomi tweeted a clarifying statement, saying it "belongs, is not controlled or affiliated with the Chinese military." It said the company would take "appropriate action" to protect the interests of its shareholders.

Separately, the Department of Commerce is listed on the China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOC) list of economic barriers that prohibit US companies from exporting or exchanging technology with designated companies unless approved by the US government. The move comes after about 60 Chinese companies were added to the list in December, including drone maker DJI and semiconductor company SMIC.
