U.K. PM Boris Johnson announces nationwide lockdown

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson announced on Monday a six-week shutdown, including the closure of schools for 56 million people in the UK, following warnings that hospitals could soon collapse due to an increase in corona virus cases.

Speaking in a televised address from Downing Street on Monday night, Johnson said the UK was at a critical juncture in the fight against the fast-spreading epidemic, ensuring the complete shutdown of schools and businesses, as well as the first nationwide lockout in March 2020.

Johnson stressed that the UK is leading the way with the introduction of two vaccines, including Oxford University and AstraZeneca, which began its release on Monday.

As of Monday, Johnson had nearly 27,000 people hospitalized with the cove - 40 percent more than the peak of the first waves that erupted in April last year.

Last Tuesday, more than 80,000 people tested positive in just 24 hours.
