Oxford-AstraZeneca's Covid-19 Vaccine Approved In India

Emergency use authorisation for Oxford vaccine

An expert panel of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) on Friday recommended that the COVID-19 vaccine, developed by the University of Oxford and Swedish pharmaceutical manufacturer AstraZeneca, be approved for emergency use.

Importantly, the Drug Control General of India (DCGI) will now make the final decision on the urgent approval of the vaccine based on the recommendations of the expert panel.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the National Drug Controller's Expert Group (SEC) meeting is still ongoing. The SEC will make appropriate recommendations to the DCGI and the final decision will be made by the DCGI.

British-Swedish pharmaceutical manufacturer Serum has signed an agreement with the Institute of India to manufacture 1 billion doses of its vaccine for low- and middle-income countries.

The application will be sent to the Controller General of Pharmaceuticals of India (DCGI) VG Somani for definite endorsement. This endorsement would make ready for the immunization to be turned out in India, which has the most elevated number of contaminations on the planet, close to the United States. The delivery will start on January 6, service sources said.
