The ‘Great’ Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn
Jupiter and Saturn are the leading pair in the sky this month. The main attraction will be the best link (or "Christmas star") on December 21st.
Jupiter and Saturn will be reunited for the first time in 800 years. They will come close enough to make it look like they are only a coin’s width apart from Earth.
But in the ensuing days, they are slowly approaching each other; Next Monday evening (Dec. 21) it approaches about 0.1 degrees each day on the way to the long-awaited “big fusion”. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings (Dec. 16-17) they will be closer to each other by a front wax crescent moon column.
Looking for Earthshine against the surface of the moon is a good night. It may not be as stunning as the best link, but if you leave at the right time, this creation will be unobtrusive and beautiful.
