Shigella Disease Infection fear in Kerala :

Shigella infection has created panic with Kozhikode district in Kerala.

With the death of an 11-year-old boy in Kozhikode, at least 40 cases of infection in the district have alerted health officials.

Of the 26 people with symptoms, two children with fever have been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, Shigella is one of the most commonly reported bacterial infections, which often affects children. "Most viral infections cause diarrhea in children, but bacterial shigellosis has been reported before. The problem is that in some cases, the disease can quickly subside and lead to death in young children.

Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, fatigue, and blood in the stool.

Shigellosis is usually spread through food and water, which are partly polluted by human excreta, said Dr. Amar Fettle, the state nodal officer for infectious diseases.

"The illness is treatable and is sensible by anti-microbials. Legitimate sanitisation techniques should be followed. It isn't dangerous however requires public mindfulness and one should play it safe food and water wellbeing alongside appropriate waste administration," Fettle told PTI
