Apple may launch self-driving car in 2024

The iPhone maker's vehicle efforts, known as Project Titan, have progressed equally since 2014 when it began redesigning its own vehicle. At one point, Apple withdrew its focus on software and reconsidered its goals. Doug Field, an Apple player who worked at Tesla Inc., returned to oversee the project in 2018 and fired 190 people from the team in 2019.

Since then, Apple now aims to create a vehicle for consumers, and two people familiar with the initiative have asked not to be named because Apple's plans are not public. Apple's goal of creating a personal vehicle for the mass market is at odds with rivals such as Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo, which has developed robot-taxis to transport passengers for a driverless salute service.

Building a vehicle represents a supply chain challenge even for Apple, a company with deep pockets that make hundreds of millions of electronic products every year around the world, but never build a car. Elon Musk took Tesla for 17 years.

Tesla's rabbits ended 6.5% lower on Monday after making their debut on the S&P 500 on Monday. Apple shares ended 1.24% higher after the news.

Apple has decided to tap external partners into system components, including lidar sensors that enable self-driving cars to gain a three-dimensional view of the road, said two people familiar with the company's plans.
