Biotech Company Moderna says coronavirus vaccine 94.5% effective
Biotech company Moderna's vaccine was 94.5% effective, according to preliminary analysis of clinical trial results, the company said Monday.
Results for vaccines come from interim analyzes of major clinical studies. There were 30,000 volunteers in the Modern study. The vaccine received an interval of 28 days to two days; Half received two shots of a placebo on the same table.
The side effects of the vaccine are usually "mild or moderate" and include injection site pain, fatigue, muscle aches and headaches, the company said.
The vaccine is based on new technology with MRNA or genetic mechanisms that help the body identify the spike protein of the corona virus - which is used to enter the body's cells.
Based on the initial data, the company will apply for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and submit applications to global regulatory bodies.
That US process authentication process can take up to two months. Moderna said it is on track to generate 500 million to 1 billion worldwide by 2021.
