Mauritius Declares State of Environmental Emergency after oil leak from stranded ship




Nation of mauritius is facing an Environmental hazard as oil continues to spill from a grounded ship near its shore.


4,000 tons of oil spilled into the sea, declared emergency in the nation in the Indian Ocean.The island nation of Mauritius declared a "state of environmental emergency" after the vessel carrying 4,000 tons of oil ran aground, causing fuel to leak into the marine Environment.


Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth said the oil spill "poses a dangerous threat" to a country of only 1.3 million people and is struggling to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr. Juanuth asked France for help in solving the oil spill. Mauritius is an island nation that depends on the surrounding waters for fishing and tourism.


The officials have said that the country is facing a economic disaster due to the oil slick from a Japanese-owned bulk carrier that got grounded in the South East of the Island


The large carrier has been spilling oil in the country's famous Blue Lagoons for over a week.


The islands are surrounded by some of  the world's most valuable coral reefs and tourism is crucial to the economy.


Leaders say it's the first time the 1.3 million islanders have been faced with an environmental crisis of this kind.
